The diesel generator market contracted by 14% in 2020
A Finnish data center now has 12 Caterpillar diesel generator sets ready to work for standby power, the companies reported Tuesday.
Telia, the Swedish-based telecommunications giant, selected Cat dealer Witraktor to deploy the dozen get-sets at its new 34,340 square meter (370,000 square foot) 24 MW data center in Helsinki. The data center is the largest such facility in Finland, according to the release.
Witraktor and Caterpillar configured a system which includes eight Cat 3516B and four 3516E generator sets. They will provide emergency power for server stacks, telecommunications, cooling, ventilation and other critical functions.
“Witraktor and Caterpillar have configured and delivered an advanced standby power solution with field-proven components that help us optimize the performance, reliability and efficiency of our business-critical IT infrastructure,” Eero Lindqvist, senior manager for Telia Finland, said in a statement.
Primary power for the Telia Helsinki Data Center is supplied by a combination of wind, hydroelectric and biomass resources. Waste heat will be recycled into the nearby city of Espoo’s district heating system for up to 25,000 households.
The U.S. Green Building Council recently awarded the Telia Helsinki Data Center a gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The data center has also received ISO certificates for exceptional operational reliability, operational quality, environmental work, and occupational health and safety.
