The diesel generator market contracted by 14% in 2020
Cummins Inc. unveiled the first battery hybrid power-generation system for military use at the 2019 Association of the United States Army (AUSA) show.
The company displayed the Tactical Energy Storage Unit at the Washington Convention Center during the show, which started Monday and concluded Wednesday.
The Tactical Energy Storage Unit is considered an enhancement of the company’s Advanced Medium Mobile Power Sources (AMMPS) generator sets. Cummins was awarded a $490.9 million contract in 2018 to produce AMMPS diesel-powered generators for the United States Department of Defense through 2023.
When paired with AMMPS, the Tactical Energy Storage Unit reduces the need for fuel, reduces costs and increases the safety of troops in combat because fewer fuel transport runs are required and the generators are quieter when in operation, Cummins said.
The batteries used on the Tactical Energy Storage Unit are designed for mobile outdoor applications, Cummins said.
